Module 4 Driver CPC Training

HGV Module 4 Initial Driver CPC Training Courses

Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) training courses in the UK are mandatory for individuals who wish to drive heavy goods vehicles (HGVs), buses, or coaches professionally. The training ensures that drivers maintain high standards of safety, competence, and professionalism on the road. It is a legal requirement for most professional drivers to hold a Driver CPC qualification, as it aims to improve road safety and efficiency within the transport industry.

The Driver CPC training is divided into two parts: initial qualification and periodic training. The initial qualification is required for new drivers and involves passing theory and practical tests, similar to obtaining a standard driving licence but more focused on professional driving skills. For those already holding an HGV or PCV (Passenger Carrying Vehicle) licence, periodic training consists of 35 hours of classroom-based training every five years to maintain the Driver CPC.

The training covers essential topics such as driver safety, road regulations, fuel-efficient driving, load security, and vehicle maintenance. It also includes practical advice on handling emergencies, understanding tachographs, and managing driving hours to comply with UK and EU regulations. Completing Driver CPC training ensures that drivers are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their job safely and effectively, helping to maintain high standards across the UK’s transport and logistics sectors.

What is the Driver CPC?

The LGV driver CPC Module 4 came into effect on 10 September 2009.  The purpose of the DCPC is to confirm that you are capable of carrying out a variety of operations and duties other than just driving, these duties are legal, social and environmental requirements.

Do I need a CPC?

If you will be driving a vehicle that is rated over 3500kg and want to receive payment for doing so, then YES you do need a CPC.

YOU CAN NOT DRIVE FOR HIRE OR REWARD LEGALLY UNTIL YOU HAVE PASSED YOUR INITIAL CPC!

Before you can book your test for this you must have passed the Module 2 Case Study Test. This is carried out at a DVSA Theory Test Centre and can be booked for the same time as your theory tests!

The module 4 Driver CPC Test is a practical test that demonstrates your ability to keep the vehicle safe and secure while also ensuring your own personal safety. Safe Loading, Vehicle Security, Border Security, Emergency Situations and Preventing Physical Risk. You will need to demonstrate your understanding of your daily maintenance checks by carrying out a physical walk round vehicle safety check

The test is made up of these 5 topics from the Driver CPC syllabus. You can score up to 20 points for each topic. To pass you have to score at least 15 out of 20 in each topic area and have an overall score of at least 80 out of 100.

If you are going to be driving for private use only, eg, a motorhome, or your own horse lorry, you don’t need to take the CPC course. There are also some exceptions for certain professions too such as mechanic, driver training, emergency services and military. The Training

The training is carried out at Matt’s training ground in Farnborough, close to the Surrey / Hampshire border where he will go through in detail, all of the five subject areas. DVSA rules state that it cannot be the same person training and testing you, so Matt works closely alongside a local DVSA-approved assessor who will carry out the test itself. The training and test are arranged to be done on the same day.

Being an independent trainer means that Matt is very flexible on the number of candidates per session (one-to-one or a group of people), and also how soon the training can be carried out. If you have a deadline and need to pass your Module 4 CPC quickly, Matt will try to accommodate you quickly where possible.

The Cost

Full training, along with the test fee, etc is just £250
